Jackfish Lake takes it name from the neighbouring ghost town of Jackfish, founded in 1890. The lake is actually one of the many beautiful bays of Lake Superior. It was here that Terry Fox swam in Lake Superior, spent the night and awakened to the peaceful sounds of nature before continuing his Marathon of Hope. The long, sandy beach has been dubbed the Terry Fox Beach. It was in Jackfish that the McKellar family assisted by two Indians staked property in 1871, which is believed to be the site of the first gold discovered in Northwestern Ontario. This area is one of the most scenic sections of the Circle Tour. Jackfish is where the last connecting spike was driven, connecting the railroads in eastern and western canada. |
